"No Pain, No Gain" — Is This Actually True in Physiotherapy?

The Myth That Won't Die

"No pain, no gain" might be the most repeated — and most harmful — phrase in fitness and rehabilitation. It makes people push through sharp pain, ignore warning signs, and sometimes make their injuries far worse.

The Truth: Pain is a Warning Signal

Pain exists for a reason. It's your body's alarm system telling you something is wrong. Ignoring it is like turning off a fire alarm instead of checking for a fire.

Good Discomfort vs. Bad Pain

There IS a difference, and understanding it is crucial.

**Good discomfort** feels like mild muscle soreness, a gentle stretch or pull, tiredness in the muscle after exercise, and goes away within 24–48 hours.

**Bad pain** feels like sharp, stabbing, or shooting sensations, pain that gets worse as you continue, pain in your joints (not muscles), anything that wakes you up at night, and pain that persists beyond 48 hours.

What Happens When You Ignore Pain

Pushing through genuine pain can cause a minor strain to become a complete tear, inflammation to become chronic, compensatory injuries — you hurt other body parts by favoring the painful one, and much longer overall recovery time.

What Your Physiotherapist Actually Wants

We want you to feel **challenged, not injured**. During physiotherapy exercises, you should feel your muscles working. You might feel mild stretching. You should NOT feel sharp pain. A good rule of thumb: if you have to grit your teeth and hold your breath, you've gone too far.

The Better Motto: "Train Smart, Not Through Pain"

Progress in rehabilitation is measured by **consistency**, not intensity. Doing your exercises correctly every day will always beat one aggressive session that sets you back a week.

Listen to your body. It speaks in pain for a reason. Your physiotherapist can teach you to understand the language.
